A


Absolute Humidity
A precise measurement of the volume of water within a specific volume of air, regardless of the temperature of the air. The absolute humidity is not affected by temperature. See also HUMIDITY and RELATIVE HUMIDITY.

AC
Air Conditioner

Adiabatic
Pertaining to a reversible thermodynamic process executed at constant entrophy; loosely, occurring without the gain or loss of heat

AC
Alternating Current

Auger
A screw-shaped device that fits into the ice bin of an automatic icemaker to propel the cubes toward the dispenser (and sometimes through the crusher.)

ASC
Authorized Service Center, a servicer authorized by particular manufacturer to perform warranty service on their products.

BOS
Bill Of Sale (a receipt for the purchase of a product for warranty purposes)

Brown Goods
Brown Goods - Typically called Brown Goods because in the old days they were radios, televisions, record players, et al. and built into wood cabinets as furniture, as opposed to White Goods, which were kitchen appliances and made in white cabinets.

CDMA
Code Division Multiple Access, a cellular technology that allows multiplexing many calls on one channel and distinguishing them by means of a digital ID at the beginning of each section of the transmission. (See also TDMA)

Celsius
A temperature scale based on the three physical states of matter, the matter being water. On the Celsius scale, water freezes (solidifies) at 0°C (32°F) and boils (vaporizes) at 100°C (212°F). Sometimes called centigrade. See also Fahrenheit.

Child Lock
An electronic control incorporated into some appliances (washers, dryers, combos, microwave ovens, refrigerators, etc.) that allows the user to lock the control panel so children cannot play with the buttons, tamper with the programming, etc.

COMBO
A laundry appliance that is both a clothes washer and a dryer. The combos use a condenser dryer instead of a massive heating element to dry the clothes, resulting in a longer cycle time but less heat and damage to the clothing. Other benefits include ventless installation and no lint.

Convection Oven
An oven that cooks foods within its cooking cavity by fan-forced hot air. Often manufactured in conjunction with a microwave oven or a range.

CRT
Cathode Ray Tube, a picture tube, as in a monitor or a television. (obsolete technology)

DA
Digital Appliance (as opposed to Analog, usually indicating electronic controls instead of manual or electromechanical)

DCR
Digital Cable Ready - A multi band television tuner that includes ATSC, NTSC, cable, and other bands to allow tuning of all chanels.

Dehumidifier
An electromechanical refrigeration appliance that reduces humidity by condensing water vapor from the air without (in theory) affecting the temperature of the room. The condensate is collected in a bucket or tank and drained by emptying the tank or using a drain hose.

Department Of Energy

DPI
Dots per inch, usually used in regard to the quality of picture on a monitor or television.

DTMF
Dual Tone Multi Frequency, a method of operating telephonic equipment with a dual-tone signal. Each button on the keypad sends a signal from the high group and a signal from the low group simultaneously. Commonly known by its BellSouth trade name of TouchTone.

DW
Dishwasher

Dispenser
An electromechanical device that makes available water and/or ice cubes and/or crushed ice at the door of a refrigerator. It is usually incorporated into a display that shows the status of the refrigerator and freezer components, allows adjustments, and shows the set and actual temperatures.

Fahrenheit
A temperature scale on which water freezes (solidifies) at 32°F (0°C) and boils (vaporizes) at 212°F (100°C). See also Celsius.

FCC
Federal Communications Commission, the regulatory agency that governs electronic radio frequency emissions, including x-rays, microwave ovens, and broadcasting (radio, television, cable, satellite, cellular, etc.)

French Door
A type of refrigerator/freezer combination that has the freezer compartment(s) on the bottom and the refrigerator on the top, accessible via two doors that open independently of each other from the center.

GPM
Gallons per minute, a standard measurement of the flow of liquid, usually water.

High Definition TeleVision

HTML
HyperText Markup Language, the primary programming language of web pages.

Humidity
A measurement of the amount of water vapor in the air. See RELATIVE HUMIDITY and ABSOLUTE HUMIDITY.

Hz
Hertz (cycles per second) The measurement of the frquency of an electromagnetic wave.

Icemaker
An electromechanical device that makes ice cubes on a regular and automatic basis and stores them in a bin in the freezer to provide a constant supply, often in conjunction with an ice crusher and water dispenser.

Kilohertz (thousand cycles per second) The measurement of the frquency of an electromagnetic wave.

Kim Chi
A Asian delicacy made of vegetables and other things pickled in brine and stored underground for aging.

Kim Chi Maker
A refrigerator product designed especially for aging (fermenting) and storing Kim Chi. The LG Kim Chi maker is programmed to aproximate the temperatures achieved during natural (old style or underground) storage to produce a superior Kim Chi.

kPa
kilopascal, a metric unit of measure of pressure, usually air or water (see also PSI)

Megahertz (million cycles per second)

Monitor (computer monitor)

MultiWave
A trademarked term involving the splitting of the microwave beam as it enters the cooking cavity, the purpose being to provide a more even distribution of microwave energy and more even defrosting and cooking.

MWO
Microwave Oven - A cooking device that uses microwave energy to cook items within its cooking cavity.

PSI

Return Authorization (documentation authorizing the return of a part or product to Reliable Parts or APD)

RAC
Room Air Conditioner

RAI
Return As Is; that is, no repair or service perfromed

RECALL
An organized effort to retrieve defective product for repair before failure occurs, based upon post-production testing, warranty reports, and product liability information.

A recall is often done in conjunction with the CPSC. Notification to the customers who have the suspect product is sent by mail if the warranty registration card was returned. Ads are run in print, on radio, and TV. Customers should consult the manufacturer if they suspect their product is or should be under recall

REF
Refrigerator - A device that stores food at low temperatures to prevent spoilage. Often includes a freezer section for storing foods at 0° F (-18° C).





RELATIVE HUMIDITY
A precise measurement of the volume of water within a specific volume of air in relation to the temperature of the air. (Warm air holds more water vapor than cold air, so the percentage of relative humidity varies with the temperature.) See also ABSOLUTE HUMIDITY and HUMIDITY.

RLM
Remote Laundry Monitor - A PLC (PowerLine Communication) system whereby a PLC-equipped appliance (currently washers, dryers, and combos) have a socket for the attachment of a modem. The modem sends information via the power lines in the house to the remote monitor, which shows a display that includes the cycle and remaining time. This product is obsolete and not repairable. It is replaced by hardwired upgrade sockets, USB connections, and WiFi links as appliances move into the IoT and are addressable by the home network.

SIRIUS®
A type of satellite digital radio transmission. (See also XM®.)

Steam Fresh Cycle
A cycle of the steam washer that tumbles up to 5 items at a time WITHOUT WATER in a spray of steam to remove wrinkles and freshen garments that have been wrinkled, as a suitcase during travel or hanging in a closet during the off-season. The SteamFresh cycle is NOT a substitute for or an alternative to dry cleaning, and should not be used on garments that would not ordinarily be washed in the washing machine.

Some dryers include an equivalent cycle.

It should be noted that the steam fresh cycle is not a substitute or replacement for dry cleaning.

Steam Washer
A front-loading washing machine that includes a steam generator to introduce a spray of live steam into the load as the clothes tumble to enhance cleaning performance. Not to be confused with SteamFresh (above).

TDMA

Volitile Organic Compounds, usually referring to petroleum (hydrocarbon) solvents in plastics, cleaners, paints, etc.

White Goods
White Goods - Typically called White Goods because in the old days they were Washers, Dryers, Refrigerators, et al. and built into white enamel cabinets, as opposed to Brown Goods, which were build into wood cabinets and considered furniture.

Wine Cellar
A refrigerator developed specifically for the storage of wine. As different wines (red vs. white, sweet vs. dry, etc.) require different storage temperatures, this refrigerator has the appropriate controls to accomodate whatever wines are to be stored.
